The Playlist

TheBlueprint Playlist

Explicit Songs - Tough Topics

This playlist is aimed to help the listener see the environmental perspectives, not a moral baseline. Talent does not dictate morality, and these songs are not an endorsement of the lifestyles they describe. This should be an exercise in Critical Media Literacy. I encourage you to add to it. More to come.

The Pipeline

School2Prison Pipeline · Step One

The School-To-Prison pipeline explained is the disproportionate removal of students that are children of color, from where they should be, that is, within classrooms. The areas I decided to run my analysis on are Chesterfield, Henrico, and Richmond. The results followed a trend that can be seen throughout the Nation. Accessing the data from the Virginia Department of Education, I selected indicators such as Long Term Suspensions, Expulsions, Diplomas and Completion.

Long Term Suspension

Under Virginia statutory law, a long-term suspension bars a student from school property and regular instruction for 11 to 45 consecutive days. Local school board discretion can extend exclusions up to 364 calendar days.

Expulsions

An expulsion mandates a 365-calendar-day exclusion, effectively barring the student from the entire school division for a full year and making reintegration harder.

Dropout + Chronic Absenteeism

Chronic absenteeism is measured as missing ten percent or more of the 180-day academic calendar — 18 or more instructional days — alongside dropout rates by race and school.

The Why

After a 44-year tenure with Richmond Public Schools, a recently retired teacher shared a perspective with me. When asked what led to their retirement, the answer felt like watching a Hall of Fame athlete playing past their prime. You smile because you remember their peak and how effortlessly they used to command the classroom. But those flashes of experience are now just echoes of the past, leaving an appreciation for their legacy mixed with anxiety for where the future generation will take it. As the teacher put it, "I just feel unsafe. I was still able to control the classroom, but it felt dangerous too."

What has changed the game so much, causing the veterans to re-evaluate their impact? Is it the unsupervised media consumption that has our minds gripped in an algorithm, the thrill of violence promoted in video games and music, or is it a desensitizing media market securing its return on investment? I cannot place all the blame on just one system, policy, ideology, religion, or invention. Instead, I blame a lack of true exposure to everything life offers, and a failure to realize how valuable the mind is as a tool whenever one finds the power of intent.

Granted, that power is hard to see when your stomach is hungry, when you are dealing with wrongdoing within supposedly safe spaces, or when you are navigating the art of peer pressure and foolish egos. Wandering in a cage of circumstances you did not choose for yourself probably sounds about right, huh? I don’t have all the right answers for I am human as well, but I can promise you that the key is not a career, a degree, entering a new tax bracket, being the center of attention, revenge, or materialism. Do you want to find it?

I started “TheBlueprint” because there was a long stretch of my journey where I had no knowledge of the cage I was in. That journey looked like the old-school television sleep screen, with a logo bouncing from corner to corner, end to end. I always wondered if I’d ever see it finally escape the screen’s borders that it knew so well. Now, as a senior at Virginia Commonwealth University studying Information Systems, I've lived the realities a lot of us know all too well: a lack of guidance, minimal exposure to resources, being shaped by the crowd, and not recognizing where I was gifted.

In the environment of welfare, section 8, single-mother household, eviction, imposter syndrome. Getting removed from classrooms at times in K-12, ISS (just once lol). And, hardest to admit, playing a hand in my own setbacks. Everything shifted when I realized I am the one in control of how I use my mind’s power of intent to respond to the world around me. The value was never the destination because truthfully there is no true end point, it’s the climb. (R.I.P. Kobe). If this helps even one person find their footing, the goal is achieved.
